Effective communication between physicians and other healthcare professionals are often barred by innumerable demands from patients and other visitors. The amount of mental pressure generated by such demands doesn't contribute a healthy way of communication.

Through the different levels of health care, communication between the patients, nurses, doctors and other medical professionals suffers from a communication barrier that tends to be deliberate and consistent.

Communication problems that are mostly experienced by these medical professionals are quite frustrating. Amongst all healthcare professionals, establishing effective communication seems tough due to factors like depression, professional discontent, exhaustion and stress.

Communication challenges faced by health professionals

Physicians and other health workers are likely to come across multiple levels of obstacles in the way of effective professional communication. For example, a common barrier is posed by an absence of a certain process or location for exchanging vital and updated information during transfer or admission of patient to a healthcare unit. Promoting a subtly communicative environment is of great importance to the Board; it urges licensees to develop such an environment and yield support towards rectifying poor communication problems with other healthcare organizations besides serving their own practices and hospitality services.

Individual behavior of physicians is often associated with other examples of bad communication. Disruptive behavior is often reflected through chronic inability; you can’t just ignore such types of behavior. In the event it becomes tough for a physician to share specific problems with his colleagues directly, then he should reach out to professionals that are better equipped to handle such problems. Such professionals could well be the head of a medical institution or facility, or other specialist physicians. For useful guidance, a leader of the physicians health program may be consulted if the physician assigned with the job proves impaired with the communication issue.

Ineffective communication could be the outcome of specific problems like inattentive or hurried interaction, casual interaction or using substandard terminology through the process of transfer within or from hospital; this includes absence of coordination.

Is it important to establish a standard form of communication?

One must consider checklists that yield a predictable and usual structure concerning circumstances involving patients to develop a standardized type of communication. More stress should be laid on acceptance or unequivocal transfer of responsibility towards all patients. Upon discovery of communication errors, such errors or confusions need to be rectified or clarified as soon as possible.

Communication only turns effective when it satisfies other parameters than interacting with fellow physicians. A culture of appreciating, evaluating and respecting the skills and knowledge of team members is closely associated with an effective way of communication. Across all major disciplines, junior members of a healthcare unit should be respected and communicated by senior physicians. When it comes to patient care, information exchange should be prioritized among most healthcare team members.
